The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy

Title: The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy
Author: Douglas Adams
Publisher: Harmony
ISBN: 1400052920

Recommended for Grades 9 and up
Genre: Fiction- Science-Fiction

Reader’s Annotation:
The Earth is about to be destroyed for a hyperspace bypass. Arthur Dent is about to hitch a ride off the planet and begin an adventure he never dreamed of.

Plot Summary:
Arthur Dent's day is not starting out well. His house is about to be demolished to make room for a bypass. He is laying in front of a bulldozer when his friend Ford Prefect takes him away to have a pint at the nearby pub. Ford has no concern for Arthur's house because Ford is actually from a planet somewhere in the vicinity of Betelgeuse and that knows the Earth is about to be demolished for an hyperspace bypass. The two of them hitch a ride on a nearby space ship and escape Earth's destruction. They soon find themselves in the company of Ford's semi-cousin and President of the Galaxy, Zaphod Beeblebrox, another earthling, Trillian, and the clinically depressed robot Marvin. They travel the galaxy in search of the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe and everything.

Evaluation:
Adams' sci-fi classic is filled with wonderful and zany humor. The character of Arthur captures the feeling of being out of the loop that many teenagers can relate to.

Notes:
There are four other books in the Hitchhiker's series:
The Restaurant at the End of the Universe
Life, the Universe and Everything
So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish
Mostly Harmless

In 2005 a film adaptation of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy was released by Touchstone Pictures.
